High School Artworks

My high school work mainly focuses on expressing my point of view toward my growing process, my dream for fulfilling my insecurity, and my view of society, ranging from childhood to teenager. My works were using different materials and styles to complete, including acrylic, photoshop, ink pen, watercolor…A total of 4 artworks were created and were separately depicting the stages of “looking back”, “dream of old-time”, “struggling”, and “courage to move on”.

Work1: My Childhood is Gone

Work Content:
The adult is me and the baby is also me as a kid. We were emerging in a pool of water where the baby me is happy, peaceful, and relaxed, meanwhile I, as an adult, am sad and calmly looking at the old me. Those items in the water are the representation of my childhood memories, such as the tooth as I was changing my tooth, and bunny ears as my childhood pet, and more.

This is an artwork dedicated to my passed memory of childhood. In high school, facing the high pressure of study, I cannot help myself but look back and be jealous of my good old childhood as a way of relief. Yet, real-life challenges, pressure, and responsibility are filling up my life like the unlimited water, occupying my space of freedom and childhood innocence. It always feels good to look back on this joyful moment, just as if I were emerging into the quiet and peaceful pool of water. But same as the reality, we, as a human, cannot stay in the water forever and wait to be drowned. Therefore, This work is a metaphor for me to look past and drown in the old happy memories. However, it also serves as a piece to remind me that this place is dangerous to stay in and should always go back to the air, “the real-life”, to move on and improve myself, catching on with different stages of life. People should always get out of their comfort zone so that people can improve.

Work2: Toy Store of Childhood

While I was creating the work about childhood, I have come to a stage where I compare my childhood with children’s nowadays, realizing that many children’s life is full of digital product, lack intimate interaction with real life, and are often filled with intense study. Meanwhile, my favorite moment in my childhood was when my parents took me to the toy store where I cannot afford the toys but always enjoy walking around there. Therefore, I have decided to design a massive toy house for both adults and children to let them experience my childhood joyfulness and get off the digital immersion for a temporary moment. The toy house consists of three-floor with different zones.

Work3: Teenage Headache Dreams

The work is the path of me getting off my dreaming about childhood and moving into youth, expressing 1:the chaotic emotions and feelings in this stage with lines and characters 2:the struggle of studying in a strict, disciplinary Asian academy learning life. 3. the realization of life’s biggest challenge, me as an individual, trying to fight myself.

Work4: Add Oil

Hong Kong was famous for its high-speed development. HK people’s rapid hustle life has made HK a place of international and it is a unique place where Western and East Asian cultures were fused into an irreplaceable spectrum. However, recent HK development is not as fast and diverse as it used to be. Moreover, the soft aspect of culture seems to be lost and was slowly changing into a boring high developed city where the life-like specialness is fading. But I still believe, in HK people’s hearts, it is still a strong place to hold on to, and the inimitable culture is always living inside of HK people’s minds, forming a hidden collective conscious that is hard to express rather than experiencing it by yourself.

A Snail was used as a metaphor for HK as a whole, carrying its shell as a house, where our soft power and cultural things are placed into it. The body was drawn and filled with many iconic economical buildings out of HK’s business district, likened to the meaning of moving forward by the economy. The head was filled with objects that represent HK’s core values. The bottom of the snail was filled up with HK People and many HK iconic characters. HK people is the foundation to support the whole body and guide HK to move. It is much slower than in the past but it is always moving forward! The Chinese word at the top left means “support” in English or so we say in HK as the slang “add oil”. Thus, the whole work is showing the spectrum of HK in my perspective. It also is a work that expresses my feeling toward this society when I was starting to graduate from Highschool and getting into the society where responsibility takes in.

Artworks Elaboration Portfolio

This session displays my source of ideas and how I did my research in order to transfer my thought and feeling into a solid art form from the draft.  It also included the material used, size, format, and more…for helping to elaborate the construction of my works such as what objects and which parts are responded for expressing specific topic. At the end of the page explain the progress and relationship of these 4 pieces and how they evolve and influence the creation of the next work.
